Kingston Student Representative Council (SRC)
Each year, students from Year 3 to Year 6 form a Student Representative Council (SRC). In order to be elected to the SRC, students must be nominated by their classmates (or themselves), run an election campaign amongst the constituents they will represent (classes or school section) and, on election day, give a formal speech to voters before the ballots are distributed. Staff members are mere facilitators in these elections, it is the students who nominate and vote for the candidates to represent their voice and views.
Once elected, the real work begins! SRC members meet weekly with teacher-mentors to plan actions and events for Kingston students and the community. Such events include celebrations, academic-themed weeks, student action and fundraising for local and international causes. SRC members act as mentors and problem-solvers and they are responsible for modelling the IBPYP Learner Profile Attributes. The President and Vice President of the SRC are also called upon to help with school tours or to MC community performances.
Kingston Choir
Led by our talented Music Teacher, the Kingston Choir is a very popular option for our Upper Primary students to explore their musical interests. The choir meets weekly during the school year and performs for our community on multiple occasions per year, including Open Day, Christmas, Chinese New Year and at our Annual Spring Concert.
Kingston Orchestra
Also led by Kingston’s Music Teacher, the Orchestra is open to students who have proficiency with musical instruments. The Orchestra is generally made up of violinists, cellists, percussionists, pianists but is open to musicians of other instruments as well. For the first time, during the 2023-2024 school year, the Kingston Orchestra, normally open to only Upper Primary students, featured two Year 2 violinists! Like the Kingston Choir, the Orchestra performs for our community on multiple occasions throughout the school year.
Kingston Newspaper Club
The Kingston Newspaper Club is popular with students who love to write and with students who wish to improve their writing and broaden their audiences. Each year, the Newspaper Club prints 4 editions of ‘Creative Quills’, where readers will find interviews, food and holiday reviews, creative writing, opinion pieces, book reviews, sports and cooking features and much more! Members of the Newspaper Club are invited to submit articles in English, Chinese or both languages!
Kingston Environmental Group (KEG)
The Kingston Environmental Group offers students a chance to take action on environmental issues and to work out their Green Thumbs! With a KEG chapter running at both of our primary campuses, this club welcomes students of all ages. Thanks to the students of KEG over the years, Kingston has incorporated conservationist habits such as Reusing and Recycling, Lights Out Routines, Food Composting, Aircon Reduction, No Plastics and even the occasional Vegetarian Day.
The KEG has planted and harvested a variety of vegetables to share with the community in bountiful years and has beautified our campuses through constant toiling in the gardens.
English Battle of the Books Team
Since 2011, Kingston has been a force to be reckoned with in the Annual Hong Kong Battle of the Books Competition. Though Kingston is a small community compared to most schools in the competition, our BoB Team has reached the final on multiple occasions and won the Championship in just our second year of competing. The BoB is not for the casual reader: the competition requires team members to read and remember significant details from 20 books before sitting down for a quiz-show style match against a plethora of other international schools. To become a competing member of the Kingston BoB, students must keep up with their reading and be able to recall facts from each book throughout the school year.
Chinese Debate Team
The Chinese Debate Team was founded during the 2023-2024 school year and is a vibrant and dynamic space where young minds come together to engage in thought-provoking discussions and develop essential skills. The Chinese Debate Team provides a nurturing environment for students from various grade levels to explore different perspectives, develop critical thinking abilities, enhance communication skills, and build confidence. Through lively debates on a range of topics, students learn to express their opinions articulately, listen to others' viewpoints, and formulate convincing arguments. In 2024, the Chinese Debate Team had an online debate and a live debate with one other international school. They showcased their extraordinary debating skills and emerged victorious against their opponents. We expect the range of opponents to grow in the next term and into the future.
Chinese Battle of the Books Team
In 2018, Kingston founded and organised the Annual Chinese Battle of Books competition amongst international schools in Hong Kong. Since 2018, the number of competing international schools has grown to eighteen and the Chinese Battle of the Books has become an important yearly event across the city. The members of the team begin reading and training for the annual competition early in the school year. During the semi-final and final competitions of the Chinese Battle of the Books, competitors from participating schools are rigorously quizzed on three assigned texts, and it takes great dedication to succeed as a member of the team. Our Chinese BoB Team won the Championship in the first year and was the first runner-up in the third year. They have consistently reached excellent scores in the final for years.
